Oil palm worker dies in quarters’ fire

MIRI: A 22-year-old local man working in an oil palm plantation was killed when a fire broke out and consumed a workers’ quarters in Batu Niah this morning (Jan 20).

The incident happened at Ladang Sawai BLD Estate, about two hours drive from Miri city.

Batu Niah fire station chief Rary Binjie said the remains of the victim, identified as Anderson Mat Jonathan, was found inside his bedroom in the aftermath of the fire.

The body was then handed over to the police for further action.

“The whole structure of the quarters was totally destroyed in the incident,” he said.

The incident occurred at around 2 am.

However, the fire station only received the distressed call at 9.50 am.

The fire had also consumed a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle.
