Elderly cheat death after luxury car bursts into flames

KUCHING: An elderly man had his lucky stars to thank for when he escaped a fiery death after his luxury car’s engine burst into fire along Jalan Setia Raja here this morning.

The 57-year-old driver managed to get out to safety in the nick of time and contacted the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

Firemen from Tabuan Jaya station were dispatched to the scene near the Stutong traffic light intersection after receiving an emergency call around 5.17 am.

They found that the Mercedes-Benz vehicle still on fire and it had spread from the engine to middle part of the car.

The firefighters brought the fire under control, but their efforts, the flames had caused about 90 per cent damage to the luxury car.

The Bomba team concluded their operation at 5.44 am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
