KUCHING: The unveiling of Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s tallest flagpole and the surrounding square’s name is slated for the New Year countdown event at Kuching Waterfront.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed that the announcement, to be made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on December 31, will introduce the names for the monumental flagpole and the encompassing square.

“The flagpole construction project does not just include the flagpole, but it is one whole complex which is called a square. However, we have to wait for the Premier to announce the name of the flagpole and the square during the New Year’s Eve.

“This is another iconic monument in the city of Kuching. Visitors, especially tourists, whether local or from abroad, can come to take pictures and so on,” he said.

He told reporters this after overseeing the full rehearsal for the New Year countdown event at Kuching Waterfront here last night (Dec 29).

The tallest flagpole which flies the Sarawak flag is located between the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) and Fort Margherita.

Extending an invitation to Kuchingites and neighbouring residents to partake in the New Year festivities, Abdul Karim urged attendance at the Kuching waterfront to amplify the celebratory atmosphere, with hopes for favourable weather.

In light of safety precautions, he advised the elderly and those at higher risk to wear face masks while participating in the countdown event.

The New Year countdown, themed ‘Let’s Celebrate Together,’ promises an array of performances by renowned Malaysian artists like Datuk Amy Search, Datuk Zainal Abidin, Hael Hussaini, Floor 88, and D’Fam.
