Ombudsman first resolute step for accountability

THE establishment of the Sarawak ombudsman marks a pivotal stride toward fostering accountability and responsibility within the administrative framework of the government.

Razaili Gapor (GPS – Beting Maro) said the ombudsman embodies a reciprocal relationship where the government assumes the mantle of delivering top-tier services to the people while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, abuse of power and dishonest practices.

“The onus lies on every civil servant in the state to assume full responsibility for their decisions and actions. By adhering to all applicable laws and regulations, they can contribute to upholding the high standards of the public service.

“This, in turn, will foster a positive and supportive work environment. As the public recognises that their rights and needs are being safeguarded by dedicated government officials, their trust in the government will inevitably strengthen,” he said during debate time in the House on Monday (Nov 20).

Supporting the Sarawak Ombudsman Bill 2023, Razaili explained that the legislation aims to infuse transparency, accountability, and integrity into government administration, ultimately enhancing service delivery to citizens.

He added the involvement of the public in upholding integrity within the government administration is strongly encouraged, as they serve as the government’s eyes and ears. Therefore, their constructive views are essential.

“Citizens bear the responsibility to report any misconduct committed by government officials, including violations of systems and procedures, abuse of power, or any other action that could tarnish the reputation of the public service.

“The public plays a crucial role in providing constructive feedback on the delivery of government services. It is aptly said that it takes two to tango.”

He expressed hope that the impending appointment of the Sarawak ombudsman will be entrusted to an individual who possesses in-depth knowledge of the system’s workings and is unwavering in their commitment to upholding integrity while pursuing the transformation of the government’s service delivery into a world-class standard.

“I trust that the appointed ombudsman will wholeheartedly fulfil their role as a steadfast advocate for the people. I hold the utmost respect for their work, which many carry out under exceptionally challenging circumstances, and sometimes at considerable personal risk.

“While realism is essential, it should never come at the expense of our ideals. The longest journey commences with a single, resolute step,” he added.
