KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has urged the Sarawak Artists Society (SAS) to explore ways to popularise Sarawak art.

During the ‘Borneo Symphony’ art show at The Spring, Dr Sim suggested the idea of organising an exhibition that includes tattooists and various art forms.

“Next time, maybe have an exhibition, add tattooists. Tattoos are arts also, a whole lot of tattooists can participate, must be smart enough, anything related to arts and for tattoos there would be a lot of followers,” he said.

In stating this, Dr Sim stressed the importance of arts and pointed out the diverse ways to express it, ranging from traditional to modern forms.

“There is no question about the importance of arts. There’s so many ways to express arts, from traditional to modern, all unique arts as well as digital arts.

“Arts is not only culture and tradition, it’s part of our life. How do we advance arts? That is a different story, but today is a form of the advancement of arts,” he said.

Dr Sim also officiated at the launching of the SAS Art Book 2023, a volume that chronicles the society’s history and features a directory of current artists and some of their finest works.

The ‘Borneo Symphony’ art show, held from Nov 10 to Nov 26, is part of SAS’s 38th-anniversary celebration, featuring events like art shows, workshops, and talks.
