KUCHING: The Sarawak Boccia Team recently emerged as an overall champion in the recent National Circuit 2 Bocia Competition 2023.
Held on Nov 3 at the Malaysia Paralympic Sports Excellence Centre in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur, the team managed to capture four gold medals (two under the flagship of State Sports Council (MSN)), three silver medals and one bronze medal.
Chi Poh Yung, who is the team manager for the Boccia team, said that 11 athletes participated in the competition, of which eight of them are males and three of them are females.
He said that there are a total of eight events in the competition and Sarawak has athletes in six events, namely BC1 Male, BC1 Female, BC2 Male, BC3 Male, BC3 Female and BC4 Male.
“I was very happy and pleased with the results shown by our athletes, they defeated the national elite members in their group before emerging as winner.
“This showed the determination and strong fighting spirit in them that they really wanted to win in the tournament.
“These results will boost our confidence for the upcoming Para SUKMA 2024 in Kuching next year,” he said in a statement.
He added that the team would continue to scout for more young talents to ensure the continuity of the team’s glory in the national competition.
“Hence, we strongly encourage parents with cerebral palsy children to come forward to contact us so that we can evaluate their children’s conditions to see their suitability for Boccia sport,” he added.
