KUCHING: Serian Division has been added to the list of venues as Sarawak expands its commitment to host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2024.

Previously, the event was set to take place across eight divisions: Kuching, Sri Aman, Samarahan, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri. In light of this, Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah expressed the state’s dedication to being a capable host.

“We (Sarawak) cannot be hosts if we are not prepared, financially and in every other aspect. “The State Cabinet has already approved the necessary budget for Sukma, including athlete preparation and sports facilities,” he said.

He said this during a press conference for the inaugural Borneo Opera Festival on Thursday (Oct 5). Abdul Karim added that the preparation for Sarawak will culminate in December this year when the state hosts Sukan Sarawak (Suksa).

He said a special press conference for Sukma will be held in the near future to provide further details. Sukma 2024 is slated to run from Aug 17 to 24. Abdul Karim had previously projected that the cost to organise Sukma would exceed RM100mil.
