KUALA TERENGGANU: Inces-sant heavy rain since early yesterday caused floods in three districts of Terengganu, namely Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Marang.

The authorities have begun the evacuation of people in the worst-affected areas, said Terengganu Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lt Col Che Adam A Rahman.

“Rainfall of heavy intensity was recorded at the reading stations in Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Marang, exceeding 100mm over a three-hour period and, in certain areas, over 200mm over a six-hour period.

“Usually, 200mm of rainfall is recorded over a month during the monsoon season,” he told reporters.

The Kuala Terengganu city centre was also flooded especially in areas around Jalan Sultan Omar and Jalan Kamarudin and the residential areas in Taman Sri Intan, Jalan Tekukur and Taman Dahlia.

Che Adam said the Meteoro-logical Department has forecasted heavy rain until today in the whole of Terengganu.

Meanwhile, the Drainage and Irrigation Department, in a statement, reported that Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping, Hulu Terengganu, and Sungai Chalok in Setiu breached the alert level at 10am.
