Sarawak Energy has awarded scholarships to 191 students and 16 of its employees this year, enabling them to pursue higher education both locally and abroad across various academic fields.
Sarawak Energy group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili pointed out the organisation’s dedication to promoting education and youth as a fundamental pillar of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
“Since 2014, Sarawak Energy has awarded a total of 1,058 scholarships. In doing so, we have helped the youth of Sarawak realise their potential and ambitions.
“These initiatives set the youth on a path to contribute to the development of a brighter and more prosperous high-income society in Sarawak, aligning with the Sarawak government’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030).”
He said this during the Sarawak Energy Scholarship Award ceremony here on Friday (Sept 8).
The scholarship recipients for this year were selected from a pool of over 1,000 applicants, following a rigorous evaluation process.
Selection criteria included academic achievements, participation in extracurricular activities, and leadership qualities, aligning with the discipline requirements of Sarawak Energy’s business.
“To ensure equitable distribution of scholarships, Sarawak Energy employs a diversity-focused approach in its selection process, aiming to benefit individuals of all genders, racial backgrounds, and socioeconomic classes.”
Out of the 207 scholarship recipients, 16 are employees of Sarawak Energy, providing them with an opportunity to advance their education and enhance their skills.
Sharbini emphasised that this programme serves as a platform for Sarawak Energy to develop the capabilities of its workforce, aligned with the organisation’s commitment to continuous improvement and Talent Management Excellence.
The scholarships cover various fields, and as part of a collaboration between Sarawak Energy and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), two new diploma courses in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering were offered this year.
These scholarships benefit 44 SPM leavers who will undergo fast-tracked and tailored courses, along with workplace learning programmes aligned with the requirements of the power utility industry.
For this year, Sarawak Energy allocated RM16mil for its undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships and RM5mil for the Uniten diploma programme.
Additionally, the organisation supported 262 students under its bursary programme, benefitting secondary school students in Sarawak’s towns and rural areas. Since 2019, a total of 582 students have benefitted from the bursary programme.
