LAWAS: An elderly man sustained severe injuries inflicted by his son, who is suspected to be suffering from mental illness.
The violent incident occurred at their residence in Kampung Tunas Baru last Friday (Sept 1) around 7pm.
In the attack, the 65-year-old victim sustained injuries to his face and left hand, and tragically lost one of his fingers during the assault by his 37-year-old son with a machete.
Lawas police chief DSP Sila Kadong said the suspect repeatedly struck the victim, causing severe injuries to the victim’s forehead, nose, and left hand—where one of his fingers was slashed.
“The victim was rushed to Lawas Hospital for treatment and he is scheduled for surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is believed to be suffering from mental illness.
“He has since been arrested and is remanded until tomorrow (Sept 4) to facilitate investigations,” he said.
The incident came to light when the victim’s wife informed one of her in-laws, who promptly filed a police report.
Sila said the case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
