KUCHING: The police have arrested 288 individuals, including 38 women, for their involvement in illegal gambling.
All of them were arrested in 293 raids dubbed ‘Ops Dadu’ from January until Aug 27.
Kuching police chief, ACP Ahsmon Bajah, said that the police, in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, also disconnected the power supply to 64 locations suspected of hosting gambling activities.
“A total of 210 investigations have been started. Out of these, 154 cases are related to online gambling, 43 cases involve unlicensed public lottery gambling, five cases deal with promoting online gambling through call centres, five cases are about illegal gambling within buildings, and three cases are connected to illegal gambling in public places, according to the respective sections of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.”
“Out of those arrested, 271 individuals have been charged in the Magistrate’s Court under the relevant sections,” he said.
Ahsmon reassured that the crackdown on illegal gambling will be intensified.

Today (August 29), a police team led by ASP Hisyam Junaidi from the Kuching Criminal Investigation Division (CID), in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, conducted an operation to cut off power in Gita.
Two eateries along Jalan Semarak were believed to be used as venues for illegal gambling.
Prior to disconnecting the power supply, notices were given to the owners or caretakers of these establishments.
