SIMUNJAN: In a continuous endeavour to restore the environment, the Forest Department of Sarawak (FDS) has teamed up with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) for a tree planting initiative at Sabal Forest Reserve.
As part of this joint undertaking, 1,225 saplings of high-value indigenous species, including meranti and selangan, have been planted.
The planting event witnessed the participation of 300 representatives from FDS, SEB, and local communities last Saturday.
This tree planting programme is closely aligned with SEB’s corporate-level initiative, the ’10-Year Integrated Planting, Protection, and Habitat Conservation Campaign’ (2021-2030), which is a key contributor to the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by FDS.
FDS, in a statement, said that while the immediate impact of today’s tree planting event adds to the cumulative number of trees planted in Sarawak under the ‘Greening Malaysia Agenda Through 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign’ (2021-2025), the overarching goal of this endeavour is to address the pressing issue of climate change.
“The more important reason for this effort is that it aligned with our attempts to combat climate change, which has emerged as one of the biggest problems confronting humanity today.
“As the forefront of the Greening Sarawak Campaign, FDS is delightful at bringing as many participants as possible from the various agencies, industry, NGOs, and the local community together to preserve the environment,” the department said.
The event also saw the presence of FDS assistant director Zarina Shebli, and SEB senior vice president Marconi Magai.
