SEMPORNA: The local authorities here have been asked to increase efforts in all aspects of maintaining cleanliness in the district, said Semporna Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said that recently there had been an incident of food poisoning at one of the resorts in Semporna and that the case was dealt with immediately by the health department while the local authorities also issued a compound to the operator.

“According to the health authority, there is no outbreak, however, this matter should not be taken lightly.

“There is no cause for concern or anxiety because there is no outbreak but at the same time all the necessary measures to monitor, control and enforce have been and will continue to be taken,” he said in a statement to Bernama today.

Mohd Shafie who is also the Parti Warisan president said the authorities are constantly monitoring and will enforce the appropriate laws to ensure the health and safety of the public and tourists in Semporna.

Yesterday, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing expressed concern and viewed seriously every tourist complaint about the level of cleanliness in Semporna which could affect the country’s tourism image.

Tiong said that issues raised by tourists to Semporna include its dirty environment, with rubbish strewn about causing a foul stench, as well as other issues such as food poisoning, below-par hospitality services which are overpriced (dirty towels, pillowcases and sheets), presence of pests and other problems. – BERNAMA
