KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 50 teams will participate in the 2023 National Rugby Sevens Championship which will take place at two venues in Ipoh, Perak, from July 21-23, offering a total cash prize of almost RM30,000.

The Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) in a statement said the tournament would be held at the Perak Rugby Stadium and the 23rd Battalion Royal Malay Regiment Camp

Like last year’s edition, the tournament comprises four categories, namely Men’s Open (15 teams), Women’s Open (10 teams), Men’s Under-20 (14 teams) and Women’s Under-20 (11 teams).

“The tournament will have two rounds, namely the preliminary round for the group stage and the knockout round for the quarter-final stage and above,” read the statement issued by MRU, yesterday.

Meanwhile, MRU competition director Fahmy Jalil hopes that the tournament will provide a good platform for all the teams to compete at the highest level.

“MRU hopes that the event will also help unearth new talent as well as become the selection ground for the National 7s Women’s team that will participate in the 2023 Asia Championships later,” he said.
