SIBU: The community is being urged to prioritise their safety and well-being during the festivities in view of the current unpredictable weather conditions.
Sibu District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili stressed on the importance of remaining vigilant and cautious, particularly in reducing outdoor activities exposed to the scorching sun.
“Such measures are crucial to avoid heat exhaustion and, in severe cases, heatstroke,” he said in his speech at the Sibu District Police Headquater’s Aidilfitri, Pre Gawai, and Pesta Keamatan celebrations here yesterday.
Zulkipli reminded the public of the need to remain alert.
“We are well aware of Sibu’s past experience at alert level 1, and we should not underestimate the potential risks associated with evening thunderstorms,” he said.
Meanwhile, touching on the event, Zulkipli said that such gatherings serve as a platform to strengthen unity and foster acquaintanceship.
“These occasions not only fall under the protective umbrella of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), but they also involve the active participation of the Sibu community, who serve as the eyes and ears of PDRM in maintaining security and harmony within Sibu,” he added.
Emphasising the significance of community harmony amidst diversity, Zulkipli highlighted that the event’s vibrancy reflected the collective effort to find a common ground.
“Tonight, we have the opportunity to enjoy the delicacies and dishes of Hari Raya, Gawai Dayak, and Pesta Keamatan, symbolising our ability to embrace and respect diversity within the community.
“This, in turn, fosters harmonious relationships that are essential for the well-being of a civilised society,” he said.
Also present were Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau, Mafrica general manager Datuk Thomas Tieng, Yayasan Farley president Eijing Lau, councillor Kevin Lau, councillor Raymond Tiong, former Sibu Police Chief ACP (Rtd) Stanley Jonathan Ringgit and others.
