Man fined RM2k for mischief

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 8) fined an unemployed man RM2,000, in default five months’ imprisonment, for committing mischief.

The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge read by an interpreter before Magistrate Zaition Anuar.

Under Section 427 of the Penal Code, the accused could be imprisoned for up to five years or a fine, or both, if convicted.

The offence was committed at a flat at Taman Sri Jaya, Batu 9, Jalan Matang here at around 5.40pm on May 4.

According to the facts of the case, the accused broke two pieces of window panes, causing a loss of RM80.

The complainant, who is the accused’s elder brother, lodged a police report after he was informed by their mother.

The police arrested the accused on the same day at 8.30pm.

It was understood that the accused was stressed out at not being able to find a job.

Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.
