MINISTER for Finance and New Economy, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has pointed out that the state government is actively pursuing the adoption of modern technology in the agro-based sector and along the agriculture supply chain to enhance competitiveness and sustainability of the agriculture sector.

The smart agriculture initiative includes a proposed development of Semenggok SARTECH (Sarawak Agro-Technology Park) under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), expected to commence in 2023 with an allocation of RM1mil, while Tarat SARTECH would be funded under Alternative Funding with a sum of RM4mil.

Abang Johari reiterated that the development of SARTECH in these two areas is expected to attract global technology-based agriculture-related firms.

“In our efforts to accelerate the adoption of smart agriculture in Sarawak, the state government continues its capacity building programmes among farmers and agropreneurs. Towards this, a sum of RM975,000 is allocated for various ICT and Smart Farming Programme in 2023.

“The development of precision farming park in Rampangi, Kuching; Sungai Sebiew, Bintulu and Kabuloh, Miri, will include modern agriculture facilities such as automated machines, sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT).

“It focuses on the production of high value food  crops  with  private  sector  participation. In 2023, a sum of RM21mil will be provided for this development under Alternative Funding.”

He said this when tabling the Supply (2023) Bill, 2022 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on yesterday (Nov 21).

“Under the 12MP, the Department of Agriculture Sarawak has been allocated a sum of RM44mil to implement various programmes to support the smallholders in the crops, inland fisheries, and for the processing and marketing of agricultural produces and products.

“The Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak will be allocated a sum of RM26mil to support the development of livestock farmers and carry out the department’s various activities in 2023.”

He also said the  state  government  had  approved  an  allocation  of RM50mil for Sarawak Agro Fund to benefit commercial farmers and industry players in aquaculture, poultry, ruminant and food crops, as well as food processing industry.

“A sum of RM25mil has   been   provided   this year and   another  RM25mil in 2023.
“To date, a total of 27 commercial farmers and agropreneurs have benefitted from this fund.”
