SIBU: The Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reports that it had 10 fire cases involving properties in areas under its jurisdiction.

Its chief Abdul Mutalif Ja’afar said this was an increase of two cases compared to the same period from January to June last year.

According to him, the cases involved shop houses, factories and residential houses with varying degrees of damage depending on the building materials and structure.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, he stressed that as a precautionary measure, the public were advised to take proactive measures to prevent such incidents from happening.

“Every household needs to have a fire extinguisher to reduce the risk of fire spreading while waiting for help.

“In addition, homeowners are also advised not to store flammable materials.

“Turn off electrical switches when not in use, avoid making electrical wiring connections and also attend talks or fire prevention training to get more detailed information.”

Meanwhile, Abdul Mutalif revealed that Sungai Merah Bomba also handled a total of eight road accident cases in the first six months of this year compared to 13 until June last year.

However, he said, in the same period, forest fire cases recorded a decrease of 17 cases so far compared to 32 in the same period last year.

He added that the station had also conducted a total of 120 special service operations compared to 151 in the same period last year.
