KUCHING: A flag raising ceremony was held yesterday to commemorate the 17th anniversary of Miri acquiring city status on May 20, 2005.
Mayor of Miri City, Adam Yii Siew Sang pointed out that Miri City Council was celebrating Miri City Day on a grand scale since the COVID-19 pandemic began more than two years.
“In conjunction with the Miri City Day celebration, Miri City Council together with government agencies, various organisation, social clubs, sport bodies and many others are holding programmes and activities in May 2022 under the banner of Miri May Fest,” he said.
He also shared that this year, there were 24 recorded events under the Calendar of Events for Miri May Fest.
“Miri City Council has entered its 17th year of becoming a city.
“I personally feel although Miri City Council had made several achievements in the past, in certain aspects,we need to accelerate our pace not because we have not done enough but it’s because others are doing even better,” he added.
Yii reminded the people not to forget the contributions of the past leaders of the Miri City Happening Team under the leadership of Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan as they celebrated Miri City Day.
“They have given us a strong foundation to prepare for greater development in the future.
“Miri City Council does not forget those who have contributed and the holding of the Annual Miri City Mayor Awards is one of the ways we convey our appreciations to past contributors,” he said.
He assured that the council would continue to deliver its best.
“With the concerted efforts of the council’s team of policy makers and team of councillors, we can carry out the programmes we have drawn up under the council’s five -year strategic plan to realise the transformation of Miri City into “The Most Liveable Green and Resort City,” said Yii.
