KOTA SAMARAHAN: Rural communities are urged to use local products to reduce the economic impact due to the expected increase in inflation.
Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN), Datuk Idris Buang said rural people in Sarawak have this privilege because they can still get products such as agriculture and fisheries from their own areas without having to rely on imported products.
“Basically, our rural farmers and fishermen can still obtain cheaper agricultural and fishery products compared to those in urban areas,” he said at his Aidilfitri Open House at the Muara Tuang constituency service centre here on Saturday night.
He was asked for comments on the inflation which was projected to increase by 20 per cent due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact on rural communities.
Idris explained that the rural people can overcome the effects of inflation if they manage their financial strategies effectively and rely on cheaper local products in their respective areas.
In another development, the Muara Tuang assemblyman said, the Sarawak State Assembly (DUN) sitting from May 17 to 26 will be officiated at by Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Several government bills will be tabled for deliberation by assemblymen during the eight-day session.
