KUCHING: Datuk Lily Yong has announced that she will relinquish her positions at the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) central level.
Yong, who is the SUPP Kuching branch chairperson, said she would relinquish those posts, including her position as the party’s vice-president, during the upcoming SUPP Triannual Delegates Conference.
In a press conference held after the SUPP Kuching branch Triennial General Meeting (TGM) last Sunday, she said she did not seek to be elected and had already confirmed the matter with the committee.
“The reason for this is that I will focus all of my efforts on uniting branch members and working closely with those who want to be a part of the party change.
“Kuching branch will also continue to firmly uphold the founding spirit of our forefathers, uphold justice without fear or favour, speak up for the people and serve the people with sincerity,” she said.
Yong added that she would not be joining the Central Working Committee (CWC) as a constituency branch and that she has nominated Peter Pui to be one of the CWC members.
“Pui is a political science graduate with a lot of experience. He was also a member of the Kuching North City Commission’s (DBKU) advisory board for 10 years.
“We have faith in his ability to organise and carry out his responsibilities for both Kuching branch and central level,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, Pui added that Yong was nominated because he felt disconnected from Kuching locals, including youth and seniors, and wanted to interact with them and re-establish trust in the branch.
“Even CWC has lost touch with us during the last few years, possibly due to a misunderstanding.”
“As a result, there is a pressing need to reconnect and take the party to a new level, involving both the youth and the older generation,” Pui said.
When asked about the disciplinary hearing’s conclusion, Yong replied it’s not fair for her to speak before a decision is made.
“I am confident and trust the disciplinary committee to be a fair and just committee,” she stated.
In January this year, Yong has been referred to the party’s disciplinary committee following the branch’s decision to dissolve its election machinery for Padungan just days before the 12th State Election on Dec 18 last year.
