SIBU: A housewife lost her EPF savings amounting to RM1,510 after she fell prey to a non-existent Renminbi (RMB) currency exchange scam recently.
District police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili in a statement, said the bluff took place on Apr 19 when the victim came across a currency exchange advertisement on Facebook.
“She then got in touch with the owner for the purpose of exchanging currency from RM to RMB as advertised.
“It is understood that the victim was promised money amounting to RMB 300, which is in Chinese currency, in exchange for RM200 that had been transferred into the bank account belonging to the suspect.
“However, the victim was tricked into making 12 more transactions amounting to RM1,510, to the same bank account for the purpose of obtaining the RMB currency,” he said.
The victim lodged a police report on Apr 24 after she transferred money from her EPF withdrawal in 13 transactions into a local bank account.
Zulkipli advised the public to be more aware of the scammer’s modus operandi in deceiving the public as well as to make rational decisions before taking any action.
“They are also advised to use their money more prudently and seek views from more knowledgeable parties,” he said.
