MIRI: Pig slaughterhouse operations here are suspended until further notice by the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVS) due to the African Swine Flu (ASF).
Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang issued a statement on Friday (April 8) that under the DVS directive, pig slaughterhouses here would be disinfected for two weeks and thorough inspections conducted.
Yii called on all pig farms and relevant parties to cooperate with the government to avoid the spread of ASF so that pork supply to the market could resume as soon as possible.
“We understand that many people in the catering industry are affected, but we must control the spread of ASF as soon as possible.
“At this stage, the DVS is disinfecting pig slaughterhouses and conducting inspections in various pig farms in Miri to control the spread,” the Pujut assemblyman added.
He said that if the situation was under control after two weeks, Miri City Council would seek consent from DVS to allow the slaughterhouses and hawkers to resume activities.
“These are extraordinary times and I call on all relevant units and operators to fully cooperate with DVS to ensure the situation is brought under control as soon as possible.”
