KUCHING: The first ‘floating mosque’ in the state is 60 per cent completed.

According to the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg, the mosque costs RM10.6 million and would be one of the state’s most iconic buildings.

“What we have left to complete is the interior design and when it’s complete, it will have a design that is different from the other mosques we have developed.

“The mosque drew inspiration from the architectural design of mosques in Turkey where its dome and minaret will be among its most unique features,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that upon completion, the mosque would be able to accommodate more than 1,000 people.

He said this while being interviewed by reporters during a site visit to the construction site of the mosque here on Tuesday.

The mosque, which would provide an impressive view at the Kuching Waterfront, is also set to become an attraction to boost tourism in the state.

Meanwhile, Johari said that the new walkway in front of the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building would feature a musical fountain which would be programmed to automatically play music at certain times.

“This is what we see is being done in Dubai and in addition to the music, the water will also have various colours and is a new addition to the city,” he added.
