SIBU: The temporary transit centre for the homeless (TTG) here will be the benchmark for other TTGs as Sarawak seek to address this issue.

State Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the establishment of the TTG was part of Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) social inclusivity commitment.

“In our efforts to be a developed country in 2030, integrated, collaborative, and holistic approaches are required from all walks of life for Sarawak’s social wellbeing.

“That is why we roped in a lot of agencies. Each has its own objectives and areas of concern in order to provide holistic and integrated solutions in addressing the issue of homelessness,” she said at the official launch of Sibu TTG on Friday (Jan 28).

Among the facilities available are consultation room, beds, dining hall, bathroom, laundry room, activity hall and many more.

Fatimah explained that the social enterprise facility and skills training provided at TTGs aimed to help the homeless hone their skills to generate income for themselves.

“Homelessness and sleeping on the sidewalk is not something that is chosen by anyone. Everyone wants to live in a dignified situation.

“These people are rakyat Sarawak, how can we let them sleep in that kind of situation? That is why we established TTGs – to keep the homeless people safe.”

Fatimah also presented a one-off grant of RM244,800 to Sibu TTG.
