MIRI: A 37-year-old man was arrested for assaulting his niece and her mother-in-law in a house at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman Lambir here last Saturday (Oct 16).

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari, who confirmed the case, said the incident took place around 7pm.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was intoxicated and allegedly attacked his niece, 25, and her mother-in-law with a plastic chair and a can of sardines.

The victims sustained injuries to their heads and foreheads.

The man was detained by a team of personnel from the Miri Criminal Investigation Department after his niece lodged a police report that evening.

Also seized were the items used during the attack.

The suspect is currently being detained at Miri Central Police Station lock-up for questioning.
