KUCHING: As soon as it is safe, Sarawak’s leaders should go back to the people for a mandate, said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Let the people decide who is competent, who works and performs at this extraordinarily challenging time, or who merely continues old habits of politicking for his or her own position,” he said.
The Facebook post yesterday addressed the proclamation that Sarawak would remain under a state of Emergency until Feb 2 next year. With this, the Sarawak state election will not be held until the Emergency is lifted.
He thanked the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud for the consultations involving the state and federal governments as well as advice by professionals over the last few weeks on the localised Emergency for Sarawak spanning another six months.
“I am looking forward to the Federal Gazette on Sarawak’s Emergency Ordinance,” he said.
“Covid-19 has been an unprecedented challenge for everyone in Sarawak and all over the world as well as our system of governance,” added Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) advisor.
The nationwide state of Emergency which came into effect on Jan 12 is slated to come to an end on Aug 1 (today).
