Seven primary schools closed in Marudi

MARUDI: Seven primary schools in Marudi, Beluru and Long Lama areas were closed due to floods.

According to a statement from Baram District Police chief, Gabriel Risut yesterday, the closure of the schools has affected a total of 461 pupils.

Two primary schools in Marudi which were closed namely Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kuala Bok and SK Penghulu Baya Malang while the affected villages were Kampung Long Panai involving 486 people with about two to three feet deep water, Long Linei longhouse (400 people) and Kampung Ulu Ridan (52 people).

For Beluru area, two primary schools were closed namely SK Long Sobeng and SK Long Loyang while the affected village is Kampung Long Jegan involving 330 people.

In Long Lama, SK Long Atip, SK Long Bemang and SK Sg. Bong were the three primary schools which were closed while, Rh. Kajan Sigeh involving 250 people, Kampung Long Bemang (987 people), Kampung Long Wat, Kampung Long Atip as well as Long Bemang Health Clinic were among the affected areas.

“This morning, we also received another call saying Kampung Long Teran was flooded with four-foot deep water.

“The police, Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and Civil Defence Department (JPAM) are going to monitor the affected areas,” he said.

Residents who are affected by the floods are advised to call the District Offices disaster room or the police operating room at 085-755221 or 085 755222 and the Bomba operating room at 085-755189.

He also reminded residents in Kampung Narum, Kampung Dagang, Kampung Kerbau and Kampung Ridan to be more cautious and bought enough food supplies.
