SIBU: The weekly market at Jalan Indah, Teku here is now busier than before, said Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh.
He pointed this out when visiting the market today (June 26).
“It is unlike last April when the Pasai cluster was still contagious and the Covid-19 cases were increasing.
“Customers have already started flooding this market. However, there are also hawkers who are not operating today.”
Ting said the hawkers were now confident in doing their business probably because many Sibu residents had been vaccinated under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
He said the programme, which was being implemented in almost all the rural areas here, was good for the economy.
He added if the herd immunity could be achieved early in Sibu, then the people’s lives could return to normal quickly as well.
“During my visit to the market, I was told by the hawkers that they had been vaccinated. Almost all of them informed me that they had the jabs.
“This augurs well for their business operations.
Look at the market now, it is slowly coming back to life,” he said.
Ting was also pleased the hawkers had finally realised that vaccination was the only way of combating the virus and reviving their business to the pre-pandemic level.
“Besides, vaccinations can also help the hawkers save themselves and others as well including their family, friends and customers. Well done to the hawkers! They are responsible citizens,” he said.
