KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing is pleased with the development plans for Kapit town, Bakun Lakefront Township and Island Resort Local Plan and Belaga.
He was recently briefed on the master plan of the projects via a Zoom meeting.
According to a statement released by Masing’s office, Kapit town will be developed into a pedestrian town and heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter the town.
“Parking buildings will be built within the periphery of the town centre. There will be road connectivity from Sibu to the town.
“Since Kapit is rich in culture, it is hoped that the development will boost Sarawak’s tourism industry,” said the statement.
The proposed local development plan for Bakun will centre on the infrastructure, culture and environmental impact on the area.
“Bakun is home to several cultural, landscape and water heritage elements that shape a hierarchy of integrated cultural and environment attractions across the Bakun Lake.
“These scenic tourism elements will be Bakun’s attractions for tourists under the Culture, Adventure and Nature (CAN) concept. Sailing and water sports will be major activities on the lake,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, the issues of obsolete government buildings and the lack of facilities will be addressed in the development plan for Belaga town,
“Solutions to the poor road system and parking in the town centre will be provided. The shortage of affordable housing and recreational areas in Belaga town will also be addressed.
“This means the current road system needs to be upgraded and new and alternative routes built to ease the flow of traffic from the new extension area upstream to the present Belaga town,” explained the statement.
Masing, who is also Infrastructure and Port Development Minister and Baleh assemblyman, said, “These are long term development plans for 30 years ahead. We hope they will address dire problems such as connectivity and accessibility of infrastructure and telecommunications.”
Also present during the virtual meeting were Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang, Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, and Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon.
