Body bags not of Covid-19 victims

MIRI: The Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) has clarified as untrue claims that several pictures which went viral on social media showing healthcare workers carrying three body bags from separate locations in Miri as those of Covid-19 victims.

The minister in charge of the committee, Datuk Lee Kim Shin said only one of the deaths was related to Covid-19.

“The two deaths occurred at Miri Hospital while another died at home before being taken to hospital,” Lee explained.

The third case (death) is still under investigation, he said.

The first death was categorised as death not due to Covid-19 complications and was reported on May 19, while the second death was categorised as death due to Covid-19 complications and was reported on May 20.

MDDMC extends its condolences to all family members of the victims, Lee said in a statement.

He advised the public not to spread inaccurate news which could cause fear and panic among the community.

“We once again remind the public to remain vigilant and always adhere to the Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedure (SOP) strictly,” Lee added.
