KUCHING: Traffic police will conduct a seven-day statewide operation dubbed ‘Ops Rentas’ from May 10 to 16.
The operation, held in conjunction with the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, will begin three days before and three days after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said a total of 780 personnel will be mobilised in the operations.
‘It is to ensure the safety of road users during the festive season and that the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) are fully complied with.
“The department have mobilised traffic policemen to the field to monitor and control traffic with the concept of total enforcement, show of force, service and advocacy to the community.
“Apart from that, roadblocks will also be set up for inspections to ensure that no individual crosses the district or crosses the zone without a police permit or without a valid reason based on the SOPs issued by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC),” he said.
He pointed out that the goal of such operations is to take action against six major offences that contribute to the occurrence of road accidents such as driving over the speed limit, overtaking at double lines, jumping red traffic lights, using mobile phones while driving and all motorcycle related offences.
He added that ‘Ops Rentas’ would also cover locations identified as accident prone areas, traffic congestion and SOP violations in public areas such as bus terminals, shopping complexes, Ramadan bazaars and district borders.
Hence, the public are reminded to obey the traffic laws and regulations as well as the Covid-19 SOPs throughout the duration of the festive season.
“If anyone is found violating the traffic laws and regulations as well as Covid-19 SOPs, stern actions will be taken based on the existing legal provisions,” he said.
