KUCHING: The home for the Sri Satok Community Based Rehabilitation Centre (PDK), namely the Datuk Amar Hajah Juma’ani Welfare Centre, is open for the elderly folk to conduct their daily activities and have fun during the fasting month of Ramadan.

A 70-year-old retired police officer, seen planting vegetable seeds at the centre, shared the challenges he faced while fasting.

He said during the first days of fasting, he felt tired and had headaches.

“My biggest challenge is, of course, my health. Lack of fluid in the body initially affected my blood sugar level but the problem soon disappeared when my body adapted to fasting.”

A 72-year-old male pensioner said, “Elderly folk who are not healthy should consult their physicians first before fasting.

“This is especially important for those suffering from lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disease,” he said.

“I was nervous and excited about fasting during Ramadan. I think fasting helps me to have healthier eating habits and it also strengthens me spiritually.

“Sahur (predawn meal) is important for the elderly. It provides the body with the necessary food and energy and helps it to endure long periods of fasting,” he explained while planting some vegetable seeds.
