1,700 families benefit from welfare programme

KUCHING: A total of 1,700 asnaf (poor) families statewide will benefit from the ‘Kasih Ramadan’ programme which was launched today.

Present to officiate at the event was Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie at Ummah Distribution Centre (UDC) here.

“This initiative aims to ease the burden of the asnaf group during the fasting month.

“TBS branches statewide will be playing their roles in distributing aid to the needy,” he said.

The aid consists of food, hampers, essential items and donation money.

“I hope that the community would work together in the succession of the programme by contributing money or food to ease the burden of the poor.

“Anyone can help register the poor through our Jejak Asnaf version three application so that we will be able to provide them assistance,” he said.

During the launching ceremony of Kasih Ramadan, five people were given assistance, namely two received their aid at UDC while the other three will be given their aid at their respective houses located at Kampung Siol Kandis, Kampung Gersik and Kampung Bintawa Ulu.

Marina Kassim, a 38-year-old single mother-of-four has been receiving yearly assistance from TBS since 2020.

“I feel grateful that there are people and institutions out there that are willing to help us ease our burden. My eldest is 17 years old while the youngest is still a toddler.

I hope that my children will be successful in the future and our sustenance will abound,” she said.

She said she has been selling popiah to make ends meet, and the income will be used to buy the needs of her children as well as for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration.

Meanwhile, the second recipient, Qaseh Leonard Abdullah, 32, said she has been receiving assistance from TBS since undergoing dialysis treatment in 2016.

“I received aid from TBS during the month of Ramadan since to ease our financial burden.

She is currently living in her grandparent’s house at Siol Kandis. She also said that she has two children, aged 12 and 10, and her husband is the sole breadwinner of the family.
