KUCHING: Three sites have been identified for the construction of a border control post, a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex and a General Operations Force (GOF) forward operating base (FOB).
“I was informed that the authorities have agreed for the establishment of a border control post, a CIQ complex and a GOF FOB in Kapit Division.
“In the next border security meeting, I will suggest these sites, to further strengthen our border security with Indonesia, especially when in 2026, the Indonesian capital will move to the Mahakam river basin.
“This will put Kapit Division closer to the new capital,” Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Jemut Masing said on Tuesday (April 6).
He said the three sites were Tapak Megah 1 as a possible GOF FOB, Tapak Megah 2 (CIQ complex) and Long Singut, Ulu Sungai Baleh (border control post).
“Tapak Megah 2 is about 1.5km from the border.
“Since Tapak Megah 1 is 20km from the border, it was suggested that a site for the CIQ closer to the border would be more suitable.
“A site 1.5km from the border was suggested and identified. Since the suggested CIQ site had been levelled by a timber operator previously, this site will be recommended for consideration to the relevant authorities.”
Masing visited the proposed sites on Monday and Tuesday, and he was accompanied by Ulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Sarawak Immigration director Datuk Ken Leben, Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Fisol Salleh and Sarawak GOF commander SAC Mancha Ata.
