Man feared drown in after falling into river

KUCHING: A 27-year-old man was feared drowned in Sarawak river after he allegedly fell from Satok Bridge yesterday afternoon (Mar 26).

A spokesperson from the State Fire Department operations centre said they received a distress call around 3pm on the incident.

Firemen from Padungan along with the special diving team (PPDA) were deployed to the scene and launched  a control post near the scene.

“According to witnesses, the man was said to have stopped his Proton Wira car on the bridge, got out from the car, climbed the bridge’s fence and jumped into the river.

“The man tried to swim (to land) but he is said to be swept away by the current before drowning, about 20 metres from where he had fallen,” the spokesperson said.

Rescuers are now at the scene to locate the man by surface searching.

The diving team were told to be on standby in case diving are needed.

As at press time, the victim is yet to be found.

A search and rescue (SAR) control post was opened by firemen yesterday near the Sarawak river.
