KUCHING: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) has successfully helped a total of 4,370 needy people in just a few months this year, said TBS general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie.

According to him, the assistance provided involved an expenditure of RM5.9 million.

“Starting with the Covid-19 pandemic last year, we  managed to help 87,514 people at a cost of RM72 million so far,” he told reporters after handing over aid at the Ummah Distribution Centre (UDC), Medan Hamidah here today (March 18).

Mohd Shibli added that Muslims were aware that they had to pay zakat (tithes) and this had led to sufficient collections.

“We hope more people will pay their zakat or contribute to enable us to help more people in need,” he said.

On the presentation of donations at the event, Abang Shibli said 11 recipients from two main TBS programmes, namely the Strengthening Knowledge Tradition Programme and the Ummah Welfare Strengthening Programme benefited from the assistance.
