KUCHING: The Chinese schools in the city are prepared for the reopening of schools on Monday.

For the SJK Chung Hua schools (number 1 to 6) in Kuching, the board of management respects the decision of the State Education Department to allow the school physical sessions to resume, said its chairman Datuk Wong Tiong Hock.

He said their schools will all cooperate fully in complying with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

“I hope the students can return to school as it has been disrupted for a year since the movement control order (MCO) in March last year.

“Although there is online learning, I understand the difficulties faced by teachers when teaching and they agree that students should return to school for more effective face-to-face teaching and learning,” he said when speaking to New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday.

Wong said SJK Chung Hua No. 5 received two hand sanitiser spray equipment donated by the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Batu Lintang chairman Sih Hua Tong.

Meanwhile, he urged parents to inculcate stringent hygiene practices for their children at home and at school. He said parents shouldn’t send their children to school if they are ill.

Wong also hoped that teachers would be among those inoculated earlier following the reopening of schools.

“I believe the chief minister will discuss with the Ministry of Education as teachers are also among the front line. Teachers who have been vaccinated can give confidence to parents on the safety of their children,” he added.

In a related development, Wong said the opening of SJK Chung Hua No 5 was postponed due Covid-19 cases reported at the school.

He said the infected individuals had been quarantined and close contacts had undergone Covid-19 screening tests and had been isolated.

He said laboratory test results for close contact were found to be negative for the virus.
