KUCHING: A disciplinary board will be appointed by Bukit Aman to determine disciplinary actions against the 11 police officers in connection with a rape case at Miri Central Police Station (CPS) lock-up last month.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail, who confirmed this to New Sarawak Tribune, said the officers, aged between 42 and 55, will still be on duty pending the decision.
“Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) will be appointing a disciplinary board soon.
“It (the board) will determine whether to demote or fire the 11 senior and junior police officers,” he said.
Recently, JIPS director Datuk Zamri Yahya had said that his department has conducted investigations into the carelessness and misconduct of the police personnel.
It was then found that the 11 police officers have been negligent in carrying out their duties.
When asked on the matter, Aidi said the misconduct is more towards failure to comply with the task instructions or standard operating procedures (SOPs) that have been set, or disobeying orders.
He added that to ensure the safety of female detainees, immediate action has been taken to isolate them (female detainees) and juveniles at the lock-up.
“Apart from that, we also made several improvements including more frequent patrols and inspections of the detainees (once an hour),” he said.
On Jan 9, a 16-year-old girl was raped by a 19-year-old male detainee in the Miri CPS lock-up.
Following that, two policemen, who were on duty during the incident, have been charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
The accused, Brase Omang, 54, and Edmund Jali, 44, pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on Feb 9 and claimed trial next Monday (Feb 22).
