KUCHING: Sarawak Energy remains persistent in its role to educate the public on electrical safety and welcomes reports from the public related to the matter.
Customers are strongly reminded that non-standard and unsafe wiring at private or commercial premises is hazardous which could damage electrical appliances, cause electrocution or ignite electrical fires.
Sarawak Energy recently received reports regarding hazardous wiring seen at business premises in 10th Mile Bazaar which has raised the concern of the public
Its utility arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad, along with the police have disconnected the supply and dismantled the unsafe wirings found at the premises.
It was discovered that the non-standard wiring connected from the distribution board from the staircase entrance leading up to the premises above posed a threat of electrocution and fire risk, endangering the public and neighbours.
The wires were also connected directly from the main incoming supply without going through the electricity meter, resulting in unregistered consumption of power.
Unregistered electricity consumption is regarded as stealing electricity in Sarawak, a criminal offence under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance which carries a penalty of up to RM100,000 and/or five years’ jail. Not only is it a criminal offence, but illegal wirings also pose safety threats to the public.
The public is encouraged to report any unsafe wiring in their area and to report any suspicious activities related to power theft to Sarawak Energy’s 24-hour customer care centre at 1300-88-3111 or email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com.
