KUCHING: Six individuals escaped safely when a chemical laboratory’s test material burst into flames at Jalan Sultan Tengah, Petra Jaya today.
State Fire and Rescue (Bomba) Operations Centre said in a statement that a distress call about the incident was received at 2.24pm.
A team of firefighters from several fire stations in Kuching were immediately rushed to the scene
“Upon arrival, it was found that the fire had destroyed 70 percent of the experimental materials in the laboratory and firefighters then entered the building and tried to identify the type of chemical.
“The Hazmat Unit (Special Team of Hazardous Chemicals) team was also present at the scene for ‘termination and isolation’ work, as well as to prevent the level of chemical hazards to a normal level,” the statement said.
Further investigation also found that the chemicals identified are sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid.
During the incident, there were six laboratory staff consisting of two men and four women, and all of them were safe.
