CHONG Chieng Jen (DAP-Kota Sentosa) has requested State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar to reverse his decision in rejecting his notice of motion to set up a special select committee to oversee the operation and exploitation of oil and gas resources in the state.

Chong said his notice of motion was rejected on the ground that it was short of the 10 days’ notice.

“Standing Order 23 has set a 10-day notice for any motion, but it does not say that the notice has to be 10 days before the sitting.

“The notice of motion would have complied with Standing Order 23 (1) had the motion be tabled this coming Thursday,” he said when raising his points during the DUN sitting yesterday (Nov 9).

Chong’s motion was to set up a special select committee comprising at least one member from every political party that are members of the DUN to be appointed to oversee and supervise the management of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) with the purpose of ensuring that the wealth from oil and gas generated through Petros will be fairly distributed to all Sarawakians.

He then said under Standing Order (23) (2) (d), there is no requirement for a 10-day notice for the submission of a motion as oil and gas (O&G) is an important resource for Sarawak.

DUN Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala who was presiding over the sitting noted Chong’s motion and said the matter will be dealt with by the Speaker.

Asfia in a press conference last Sunday said Chong’s motion was rejected due to late submission as the closing date was on Oct 30.
