KUCHING: Radiating confidence and charisma in front of the camera and having the ability to effectively deliver the substance of a message … these are among the talents required to be a new presenter.

What was once a skill nurtured from doing part-time modelling has truly paid off for Marzella Sigai who is now the Iban news anchorwoman for TVS.

According to Marzella, she does not have much experience in broadcasting but she did do a lot of modelling when she was still in university. From there she realised the key to of posing with grace and to never be clumsy when in front of the camera.

“My interest in broadcasting grew slowly when I joined TVS. Moreover, my family also gave their full support for me to continue developing my talent in this field.

“The best part is that they never missed watching me reading the news every day,” said the 27-year-old news presenter.

Marzella, who has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (Marketing) from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), also has intentions to further develop her talent in hosting programmes.

In addition to reading the news, Marzella is also the host for ‘Borak Teh C Peng’ which airs at 7.30am from Friday to Sunday.

Another TVS Iban news presenter, Jessica John Chung, said her involvement in broadcasting was like a dream because she never planned to venture into the career.

“I attended the TVS interview to apply for a position in the Human Resources Division because I have an Executive Master’s in Administrative Science and Policy Studies from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

“However, in the interview I was asked to speak like a news presenter and so on,” said the Iban-Bidayuh-Chinese descendent.

Further elaborating, the 25-year-old said the confidence to face the camera and speak in front of a crowd today has in fact been nurtured since she actively participated in beauty pageants (Miss Unity Sarawak 2019 and Miss Valentine 2020).

“For me, a news reader should have a different facial expression according to the news presented,” she said, adding that she hopes to further develop her talent in hosting.
