KUCHING: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is hopeful that there will be no spike in Covid-19 cases when Sarawak holds its upcoming state election.
“If the Sarawak election is carried out later, we hope that there will be no increase in Covid-19 cases happening in this state like what has happened in Sabah,” he said.
He advised the people of Sarawak to continue to take precautions amid the spike in Covid-19 cases nationwide, adding that the community needs to take the rise in cases that occurred in Sabah as a lesson.
“After the Sabah state election there was an increase in Covid-19 positive cases in the state and today (Oct 1) the country recorded 260 positive Covid-19 cases.
“In this regard, I am worried because after the Sabah election, Sarawak will also face the state election,” he said.
He said this while speaking during the Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 at the new Kuching South City Council (MBKS) park here on Thursday night.
He added that in this situation, all efforts must be done to curb the spread of Covid-19 as Sarawak does not need a new cluster of cases.
“However, we believe that the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is firm in taking care of the community in this state.
“God willing, we will be protected from such things but we all need to always be vigilant no matter where we go, including festivals and so on,” he said.
