Vessel, crew detained in diesel smuggling probe

MIRI: A vessel was detained after it tried to smuggle diesel worth RM227,500.

In an operation codenamed Op Benteng Laut, the marine police stopped the suspicious-looking tanker that was on its way to Miri River around 10pm on Wednesday (Sept 2).

The five crew members aboard, including the captain, were arrested.

“Upon inspection, 130,000 litres of diesel was found, worth an estimated RM227,500.

“The crew also failed to produce any valid documentation from the Customs Department, and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs,” a statement said.

The diesel and suspects were taken to the Miri Police Station for further action and the case has been handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Miri Office for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
