KUCHING: The war against the Covid-19 pandemic in Sarawak is still ongoing and the situation has not stabilised, says State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said although the state recorded zero Covid-19 cases for the past few days, this did not mean that the war was won.
He reminded Sarawakians to abide by the set standard operating procedure (SOP) and to learn from the mistakes made by other countries, in view of the emergence of a second and third wave overseas.
“Whether we are going shopping, gathering, or at the restaurants, it is important that when we abide by the SOP, as we have seen before, the chain of Covid-19 can be broken.
“When we fail to comply, that’s where (the second wave) happens,” he told the press after delivering the daily Covid-19 update on Tuesday (Aug 4).
He said other countries seemed to be experiencing an early victory against Covid-19, only to be plagued by the second and third wave, which was often worst in most cases.
“We do not want this to happen in Sarawak.
“We know that these things happen when people fail to comply with physical distancing rules and attend gatherings.”
He added that the police would be stricter in the monitoring of SOP compliance.
“We are not doing this because we like to compound or punish anyone. We only want people to abide by the SOP.”
On that note, Uggah praised the majority of Sarawakians who complied fully with the SOP.
“For those who are still not complying, please cooperate and sacrifice for now to ensure a brighter future and secure our victory in the war against Covid-19.”
