KUCHING: A seminar on sustainable, quality and safe agriculture production will be held on 17 April, 2017 at Imperial Hotel here.
The seminar is organised by Sarawak Institute of Agriculture Scientists (SIAS) in collaboration with Department of Agriculture (DOA) Sarawak and Malaysia Institute of Chemistry (IKM), Sarawak Branch.
The theme of the seminar is “Towards safe and quality food crop production in Sarawak through Good Agriculture Practice (GAP)”.
According to a joint press release by SIAS and IKM, the seminar aims to highlight the importance of Quality Assurance Programme (QAP) in agriculture production.
The QAP is implemented by DOA through the myGAP and myOrganic certifications. The certifications will ensure a sustainable, quality and safe agriculture production.
The seminar is expected to attract about 200 participants from government agencies, myGAP and myOrganic participants, entrepreneurs, non governmental organisations, consumer bodies, retailers, professional bodies and Chambers of Commerce.
Five papers to be delivered during the seminar are as follows:
Paper 1: Quality Assurance Programme through myGAP and myOrganic certification.
Paper 2: Pesticide residue in agriculture produce from myGAP certified farm.
Paper 3: Production of pesticide safe food crop through Integrated Pest Management.
Paper 4: Production of pesticide free food crop through organic farming.
Paper 5: Pesticide regulations in Malaysia.
Among the highlights of the seminar is the presentation of the myGAP certificates to 15 myGAP participants from Sarawak who passed the certification in 2016.
There will also be an exhibition put up by myGAP and myOrganic participants producing different food crops such as banana, coconut, vegetable, fruits, rice etc.
The seminar is expected to be declared open by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
