MIRI: The Saberkas weekend market here will be allowed to operate this weekend, subject to strict standard operating procedures (SOP), says Mayor Adam Yii.
The decision was made after a lengthy discussion with the traders.
“Miri City Council (MCC) will make the arrangements before they (traders) are allowed to reopen the Saberkas weekend market,” he said when met before carrying out an inspection at Service Sarawak, Miri Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) yesterday.
Service Sarawak counters resumed operations on May 15 under strict SOPs.
Service Sarawak is the payment collection service for electricity, water and assessment bills.
“We want to see live get back to normal but under strict SOPs,” reiterated Yii.
He sympathised with hawkers and traders for not been able to do business for the last three months due to the movement control order (CMO), which was then extended to the conditional movement control order (cMCO) due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On MCC’s city hall project, which had been halted during the MCO and cMCO, Yii disclosed that construction had resumed but with strict SOPs.
“Only half of the workers are allowed to come to the construction site,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, for MCC’s other services such as grass cutting and drain cleaning, these resumed under SOPs but with half of the workers allowed to work.
“For garbage collection, we never stop the services,” he added.
