KUCHING: Rural parents have been advised to guide their children in their daily school exercises during the movement control order (MCO).

Engkilili assemblyman Johnical Rayong Ngipa noted that due to lack of internet facilities in rural areas, it is difficult to conduct online teaching and learning (PdP) in lieu of school classes.

As such parents in the villages or longhouses can work together with the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) to assist the children.

He said due to the MCO and the Covid-19 pandemic, students are not able to go to school. This has impacted especially the rural students and teachers due to lack of Internet access for online teaching and learning.

“Indeed, people in my area are having problem with PdP due to lack of facilities such as internet services and not having mobile phones to communicate with the teachers,” he told New Sarawak Tribune Saturday.

He said even those who owned mobile phones still experienced difficulties because most are using prepaid plan and the internet data might be insufficient.

“For instance, they buy the prepaid top up for RM10, but they can only purchase the 1GB internet data. Now even we are given free 1GB free internet during MCO, it is still not enough to conduct PdP,” he lamented.

He therefore hoped parents would be able to guide and monitor their children’s studies for the time being.
