KUCHING: A WhatsApp message claiming that an individual working at Mydin Hypermart Petra Jaya at Jalan Demak here had been infected with Covid-19 has gone viral, prompting the hypermarket to deny the fake news in its Facebook page.

“We would like to urge the public to stop sharing the fake Covid-19 message that had been spread widely around Petra Jaya; not to share unverified regarding Covid-19 as it will cause unnecessary panic in the community,” said the hypermarket.

The WhatsApp message had urged members of the public not to patronise the hypermarket.

Mydin also said anyone spreading fake news could be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
